Hampstead Heath

It is the memory etched from this photo, rather than the photo itself that provides a sense of beauty and nostalgia in which i constantly remind myself of. I took this photo in 2009 in London's Hampstead Heath. The air was crisp and there were small patches of snow dispersed within the bed of autumn leaves. My best friend and I got lost in the Heath for hours, just as it was getting dark, yet it felt so invigorating. I had come to one of the largest  largest urban jungles in the world, yet my immediate surroundings suggested i was 'nowhere'. Sometimes nature alone beats the presence of even the most magnificent buildings.

Rembrandt study by Jordan Dalah

I am fascinated by the way in which the old masters paint portraiture, and why all of a sudden, during the post modern era, their is a surge to almost reject and in a sense 'preserve' the reality of art, instead only to swap it for the mediocrity and ambiguity of post modernism. It is this way of thinking that inspired me to try and re-create the work of Rembrandt, in order to understand the dying skill of the artist behind the portrait. I personally admire Rembrandt's' renaissance work, and i am passionate about keeping this kind of art as more then just a means of self preservation within the realms of archaic art galleries. How many young artists revert back to 16th century portraiture? Art is no longer about what you paint, or the technical skill instilled in a particular piece of work, but rather a means of self expressionism, an outlet of profundity which diminishes art of its natural integrity and grandiosity.

With this artwork, and a selection of others, I was selected to exhibit in the 2011 Art Express showcase.

Mass Studies for Ann Demeulemeester

  • I have always admired this alien piece of architecture, primarily because of its 'breathing' exterior, but also because of the deeper rooted meaning instilled within it. It is Ann Demeulemeesters' concept store located in the Gangnam district of Seoul, and stands as a testament to the Neo-medieval designer whose clothing is just as inspirational as the facade in which it's displayed. I show immense compassion for Mass Studies architecture firm, who built this relic as a sanctuary of glorification, to a designer who deserves such critical recognition.

The architects successfully incorporate as much nature as possible into the building within the constrains of a low-elevation, high-density urban environment. The building defines its relationship between the natural and artificial by amalgamating the two so literally. The building, a representation of all that is artificial in nature ends up 'wearing' the natural elements of our environment, symbolising a harmonious integration of both nature and fabrication. It represents the positivity of combining rather than isolating man and nature.
